Chassis Vin Number

The chassis identification number is located on the floorpan tunnel directly under the rear seat bottom in the Type I and Type III. In the Type II, the chassis number is located on the right engine cover plate in the engine compartment. Beginning with the 1965 model year, a nine digit serial number system was implemented. With this system, the first two numbers are the car’s model number. The third number corresponds to the year of manufacture; for example: “5” stands for 1965, “8” stands for 1968, etc. A tenth digit was added when production passed one million.

Identification Plate

The identification plate contains the vehicle serial number and paint, body, and assembly codes. On the Type I models, the I.D. plate is located behind the spare tire in the luggage compartment. On early Type II models the plate is located on the right side of the overhead air duct in the cab or driver’s compartment. The plate in Type III models can be found next to the hood latch in front of the spare tire in the luggage compartment. Starting in 1970, the I.D. plate was relocated to the top of the driver’s side dash on all models and can be seen clearly through the windshield. In additionto the dash tag, a silver adhesive sticker was fixed to the driver’s side B-pillar just above the door latch. This sticker contains the vehicle identification number and is heavily perforated to prevent removal for reuse.
