Question On Disc Brake Conversion For 1960 Beetle

Ask AndyQuestion On Disc Brake Conversion For 1960 Beetle
Andy Shouse asked 7 years ago

I recently purchased a 1960 beetle that has a disc brake conversion on the front and rear. One of the previous owners did a 4 lug conversion instead of keeping the wide five. I would like to convert it back to wide 5 and keep the F/R calipers and drop spindles on the front and just replace the rotors. Is there a way to find out who produced this kit?

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for your question. There are some variables that can come into play here. I will start with your last question, how to determine who’s kit you have. The best way is to get me some photos. Most of the kits out there are just copies of our AC Industries brake kits. You can send photos to andys@socalautoparts

I can tell you that, as I am typing this, I am not aware of anyone in the industry that makes a kit for the front that does what you want to do. I can tell you that AC Industries does have a new rotor and caliper coming out in the spring of 2018 that will bolt right on to your spindle and work. If you can wait, that’s what I would suggest.

As for the rear, does your kit have E-brakes? If yes, we do have a rotor that will work with most of the kits on the market, allowing you to remove the 4 lug rotor and replace it with our wide 5 rotor. I would need to confirm what rear axles toy have on the car.

If the car does not have E-brakes, at this time there is a rotor, but it will widen the rear track of the car 1″ on each side.

Hope this has helped,

Andy
