I have a 1962 Bug with a modified motor, maybe a 1776 or higher and my carburetor throttle plates are frozen/rusted shut. The engines starts and idles. I just can’t give it any gas via the gas peddle or the linkage at the motor.

Is it better to have them rebuilt or replaced?

This is the first step to ma

Hi Richard,

You are asking me to make a judgment call with very little information.  It would not be wise for me to do that.

I will say, that most carburetors that have had water inside them and are rusted up will normally not function at all.  In my opinion, it is a good sign that yours are at least trying to work.

Have you tried using some penetrating oil, such as WD-40? Have you removed the throttle linkage to confirm that it is not the problem?  Once you have used a penetrating oil, try tapping gently with a soft-faced hammer on the throttle shaft ends to see if the throttle shafts will move.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, Andy
