I’m rebuilding the engine but I got it in pieces. I’m missing the metal that goes into the lip of the gas tank and I’m assuming it bolts to the metal that goes on top of the engine

Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for your question.  On Buses produced 1972 and newer, this used a type 4 motor.  I am not aware of any new engine tin available for this motor.  You will need to look for used parts.  I would try searching thesamba.com to see if you can find what you need.
