Transmission sometimes comes out of third gear after the clutch is engaged following a one to two shift.
Is there anything that can be done to try to correct the jumping out of gear problem that does not involve removing the transmission from the car? The car is stock with its original 1500 cc engine. The clutch seems to be operating properly. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Nick
Hi Nick,
Thank you for the question.
There is no external adjustment on the VW trans to help with this. If this has just started to be a problem, chances are very high it is caused by wear in the trans, and it is time for a rebuild. There is a small amount of adjustment at the shifter, but I do not want to get your hopes up that this will fix the problem.
To make this adjustment on the shifter, look at the base of the shifter and find the 2 mounting bolts. The word for today is “finesse”! As I understand, you are having problems with the trans coming out of 3rd gear, to start, place the shifter so that the trans is in 3rd’ gear. You will only want to move the shifter about 1/8” at a time. I suggest looking at a tape measure to see just how small of an amount that 1/8” is!
Only loosen these 2 bolts enough to get the base to slide front to back. Carefully, slowly move the base of the shifter towards the back of the car about 1/8” and re-tighten the bolts. Now go test drive the car.
Fair warning, moving the shifter too much will cause a shift problem with 4th gear!
If this adjustment does not fix the popping out of gear problem, its time to replace your transmission.
Thanks,
Andy
