I have a Beetle 1962 Sedan – the windshield washer does not work because the knob on the windshield switch comes out – I don’t know if it is broken or not – it comes out as I pull it out.

Hi Biagio,

Thanks for your question. On a 1960-1967 VW Bug, the windshield wiper/washer knob is two parts (#131-543-IV). The outer part is what operates the switch to turn on and off the wiper motor.  The inner button works the washer portion. This button has a rod on the back of it and yes, it will just pull out.

Do you understand how a windshield washer system works on your Bug? It works from air pressure from your spare tire. The hose from the washer bottle contacts to the valve stem on the spare tire. This pressurizes the reservoir bottle. A hose with pressurized fluid connects to the back of your wiper switch. When you depress the button on the dash, the valve portion of the wiper switch allows the fluid to pass through to the squirter on the cowl.

The positive aspect of this system is that it is very simple. The negative aspect is that if you use it often, you might find that your spare tire is flat when you need it most!
