Windshield Wiper Spring Tension

Ask AndyWindshield Wiper Spring Tension

I have a 64 std bug. The wiper blade arms (recently replaced) don’t seem to press hard enough on the glass. The springs don’t seem robust enough and there doesn’t appear a way to adjust them. Is there a solution?

Hi Michael,

This is reoccurring problem with some of the aftermarket wiper arms. There is a fine balance of having the spring too soft and not having enough pressure on the wiper blade verses, having too much spring tension and flattening the rubber on the wiper blade.

You can try and bend the flat part of the arm, changing the angle that pressure is applied to the blade, or try finding a different spring at a hardware store. Lastly, on some of the springs you can cut off the end loop and use the next coil as the loop. This might make the spring too tight and cause too much pressure.

Please keep in mind, that once you try to modify the arm most companies will not accept it as a return.

Hope this is helpful to you,

Andy
