Rear Axle Play

Andy,

If I grab the stub axle on either side, there is some movement but on the drivers side, I can push/pull the end of the axle whereas on the passenger side I cannot. Is play normal and if so how much? I have attached a video to show just how much play there is. If this not normal, what parts should I look at replacing/adjusting?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your question. The in/out motion that I see will happen when the drum or rotor has not been installed. In the rear bearing housing there is a series of spacers and bearings that form a “stack”. Once the drum or rotor has been installed and the large castle nut has been torqued down there should not be any more movement. Sometimes you will find that one stub axle will move in/out easier than the other, as it sounds like with your car. This is common and is nothing to worry about.

While you have this apart, I would recommend taking the time to repack the wheel bearings with fresh grease!

Thanks  Andy
