Shift rod

c.roper asked 5 years ago

Pulled the shift rod to check the rod and replace the bushing. Rod looks fine but noticed a slight bow in the shaft. It that normal?

Hi Craig,

Thank you for your question.

Having a bow or slight bend in your shift rod is normal. Due to the small differences in the manufacturing of the VW floor pan, the factory needed to come up with a way to make small adjustments to the length of the shift rod. The bend in the shift rod helps to adjust the length. The straighter the shift rod, the longer the rod will be. With more bow, the shift rod gets shorter. The final adjustment to the shift mechanism is done at the base of the shifter with the two shifter mounting bolts.

Thanks Andy
