Volkswagen Engine Identification:

On upright fan shrouded Type I and II engines, the engine number is stamped on the crankcase flange directly under the generator support and can be seen clearly through the fan belt. On Type III engines with the fan on the end of the crankshaft, the number can be found on top of the case along the crankcase joint between the air cleaner and the oil cooler. The engine can be identified by the letter preceding the serial number.
